1948 Ford 8N Tractor
Description
The Ford 8N, introduced in July 1947, marked the first significant redesign of Ford’s tractor series since 1939. No longer built with the assistance of Harry Ferguson, the new 8N is easily distinguishable with its new light grey sheet metal and “red belly” chassis. The drawbar and PTO power rating increased as the engine compression ratio was raised to 6.5:1 compared to the previous 6.1:1. This increased power was better utilized with a new four-speed manual transmission. The hydraulic was also updated with “Position-control” for the three-point hitch to improve implementation flexibility in varying soil conditions. The last significant improvement was the inclusion of footrests for the operator, along with relocating the clutch pedal to the left, with the split brake pedals now on the right. Today, these tractors remain popular with collectors for their iconic styling, reminiscent of a bygone era.
