Description
One would be hard-pressed to find a list of the best car chase scenes in film that doesn’t include the high-speed pursuit from 1968’s "Bullitt," with most placing it firmly at the top. Paying homage to the iconic Highland Green Metallic 1968 390 Fastback driven by Steve McQueen through the streets of San Francisco, Ford partnered with Warner Brothers to bring a special Bullitt variant of its GT to Ford showrooms in 2008. Unlike the 2001 SN95 variant of the Mustang Bullitt, the retro styling of the fifth-generation Mustang GT had much more in common with the original 1968 Fastback. Other design elements tying it back to the legendary movie car included its lack of badging, scoops, and spoilers, with just a subtle circular badge on the rear panel identifying it as a Ford Bullitt.
More than just an appearance package, Ford Racing was tapped to equip a host of upgrades including 15 additional horsepower from the 4.6-liter V8, stiffer shocks, springs, and a strut tower brace, and a true dual-exhaust system specifically tuned to evoke the burble of Detective Frank Bullitt’s own 1968 Mustang. Only 5,808 of the Mustang BULLITTs were produced in 2008, each with its own VIN-specific serial number on a plaque affixed to the car's strut tower brace, making them highly collectible today.
