Description
The late Reeves Callaway began creating turbocharger kits in his garage in 1977 for contemporary German cars. Callaway had a degree in art and his creations were masterpieces of both precision and engineering. This performance and craftsmanship of his turbos caught the eye of Corvette Chief Engineer Dave McLellan, and Callaway would go on to build the RPO B2K factory option, the famous Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette from 1986 to 1991.
After the Twin Turbo program ended, Callaway continued to create aftermarket normally aspirated upgrades for Chevrolet products until February 2006, when the C6 Callaway Supercharged Corvette was introduced. “It looks like a standard Corvette, it has just a subtle hood change... and we sold it through prominent Chevrolet dealers nationwide as an option for $18,900,” said Callaway. The factory 430 hp 6.2-liter LS3 V8 was upgraded with a Magnuson MP-122 supercharger, high-flow injectors, unique fuel system controllers, and a liquid-to-air intercooler, rated at 580 hp.
Motor Trend noted, “It’s totally docile and tractable in city traffic, but uncork it on an empty freeway on-ramp and the supercharger whine shouts down the fourth-order V-8 music one expects from an ultra-Vette. This is definitely a different animal than the Corvette Z06, but one worthy of similar consideration.”
