Introduced in 1998, the 996 series Porsche 911 Carrera marked a significant evolution in the iconic 911 lineage. The 996 series was the first to feature a water-cooled engine, a departure from the air-cooled engines that had powered 911s since their inception in 1964. This change was driven by the need to meet stricter emissions and noise regulations while improving performance and reliability.
The 2003 model year brought several updates to the 996 Carrera. It was powered by a 3.6-liter flat-six engine, producing 320 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed Tiptronic automatic. The car could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and had a top speed of 177 mph.
In terms of design, the 996 Carrera featured a more streamlined and modern look compared to its predecessors, with integrated headlights and a sleeker body shape. The interior was also updated, offering improved ergonomics and higher-quality materials.
Thanks to its rear-engine layout and advanced suspension system, the 2003 Porsche 911 Carrera maintained the model's reputation for exceptional handling and driving dynamics. This excellent example has spent most of its life in the low desert outside Palm Springs, California, and it has driven fewer than 40,000 miles.
