Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Upon its launch in 1999, the BMW X5 “SAV” was branded in press material as a “Sports Activity Vehicle,” distinguishing it from the many Sports Utility Vehicles available on the market at the time. As such, BMW’s first-ever 4x4 boasted car-like styling, large 20 inch wheels, and a sophisticated, 282 horsepower 4.4-liter V8 engine borrowed from the 540i. Despite handling like a performance car, the X5’s excellent dynamics did not come at the expense of off-road credibility, which it shared with L322-generation Land Rover including its Hill Decent Control system (developed following BMW Group’s acquisition of Land Rover). As to be expected of BMW, the interior build quality and materials of the interior were of the highest quality, with swaths of leather and liberal use of wood trim covering the doors, dashboard, and center console. A major sales success when new, the first-generation BMW X5 set the performance standard for SUVs and continues to be a satisfying driving experience today.
