Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Saab holds a stellar reputation for building two things: fighter jets and quirky, fun-to-drive cars with a built-in sporting nature. While the JAS 39 Gripen took to the skies, Saab’s 900 Turbo implemented a similar design philosophy of its aerospace engineers. Built with the trifecta of safety speed, and handling, the 900 Turbo was a complete reimagining of the passenger car, with an engine mounted reversely, with the crank facing away from the vehicle, reconnecting with the transmission which sat directly below it. Thus, power from the crank would be delivered out of the engine at the front, then transferred down and back to the transmission below via a set of chain-driven primary gears. The 900 Turbo was built with safety as a priority, to achieve this, Saab implemented a safety cage concept in its design. This construction philosophy derived from the company’s aircraft manufacturing heritage was awarded numerous times during the 900’s 20 year production run. Saab’s focus on safety, its ability to think differently, and its technological leaps and bounds have afforded the company a very specific customer base. J.D. Power's APEAL study found that 87 percent of SAAB owners were professors or in technical roles, speaking to the brand’s brainy attitude.
The final iteration of the 900 engines, this 2.0-liter inline-four is aided by an intercooled Mitsubishi TE-05 turbocharger developing 185 horsepower. The exterior is finished in Talladega Red on a beige leather interior, the later chrome accents and asymmetry of the hood all add to the charm of the 900 Turbo. This well-maintained example represents Saab’s commitment to performance and style, and with its robust construction and distinctive aesthetics, it makes it an intriguing choice for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
