Description
Could lightning strike twice? In 1994, Carroll Shelby set out to develop the spiritual successor to his Cobra. The resulting Shelby Series 1 was the first all-new Shelby design since the 1960s and the only car ever entirely conceived and built from scratch by Carroll Shelby himself.
The Series 1 featured a sophisticated aluminum chassis of Shelby’s own design, wrapped in a sleek carbon fiber body. Power was by Oldsmobile’s 4.0-liter Aurora DOHC V8 engine producing 320 horsepower coupled with an RBT/ZF six-speed manual transmission. Weighing less than 3,000 pounds, zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds was possible. Shelby also offered a $35,100 450 hp Vortech supercharger option, and it is believed that approximately 60 of the total 249 Series 1 cars produced received this upgrade directly from Shelby.
Showing just 973 miles, CSX5267 is a rare factory supercharged example and is one of the few Series 1 cars finished in red with white racing stripes. A 2004 bill of sale indicates CSX5267 was delivered new to racing legend Tony Stewart, so it’s only fitting the sun visors are autographed by both Tony Stewart and the late Carroll Shelby.
