1998 Mercedes-Benz SL 500
Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Legendary Mercedes-Benz design chief Bruno Sacco has called the R129 SL-series his “most perfect car.” Sacco’s bold design of the Mercedes-Benz R129 earned the international Car Design Award in 1991. But the beauty was hardly skin deep, as the R129 possessed legendary engineering with pioneering advanced safety features, like an automatic roll-over bar which pops up in just 0.3 seconds when the vehicle senses a possible crash. Even the seats featured 20 patented safety innovations. The 1998 SL 500 was the last powered by the 5.0-liter, 32-valve, DOHC “M119”V8 with Bosch LH-Jetronic fuel injection, good for 315 horsepower. Also, in 1998 came slightly updated styling and Nappa leather seating. The optional SL Sport package introduced in 1996 added AMG 18 inch wheels and various aero upgrades. Much more of a grand tourer than a nimble sports car, the R129 is an accomplished cruiser with ample performance that pampers its driver and passenger. And the convenient well-insulated convertible top, handy stowage area behind the front seats, and fairly generous trunk make the SL 500 the perfect road-trip vehicle.
