1997 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV RS Start-Up and Walk-Around
Description
In a ceaseless quest to establish itself as a builder of robust and technologically advanced vehicles, Mitsubishi entered the highly competitive realm of the World Rally Championship, scoring its first points with the Galant VR-4 in the late 1980s. By 1992, Mitsubishi homologated the Lancer Evolution for Group A competition, featuring a modest sedan body and a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four creating 244 horsepower. The following “Evo” II and III models from 1994-1996 grew in power and sophistication, gaining a reputation not only for their impressive rally-based power but also for their focused handling and drivability at the limit. As the Evo entered its fourth generation, it adopted a new body style featuring monstrous intakes and integrated fog lamps. A racing camshaft, lighter pistons, and a twin-scroll turbocharger yielded another 10 horsepower, bringing total output to 276 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The Evo IV’s most significant advancement over previous generations, however, was its new active rear differential, allowing the car to better regulate understeer and oversteer. In recent times, Mitsubishi Evos have gained modern classic status as some of the most iconic rally cars of the 20th century.
