The Mazda MX-5 Miata (NA), the first generation of the MX-5 series, was produced from 1989 to 1997 and revitalized interest in lightweight roadsters reminiscent of classic British sports cars like the MG B and Triumph Spitfire. Unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show on 10 February 1989, with an initial price of $14,000, the MX-5 quickly garnered acclaim, winning Automobile Magazine's 1990 Automobile of the Year and making Car and Driver's 10Best list from 1990 to 1992. The original 1.6-liter inline-four engine, producing 116 horsepower, was upgraded to a 1.8-liter engine in late 1993. Designed with elements inspired by the Lotus Elan, such as pop-up headlights and slim chrome door handles, the MX-5 was engineered to be light and agile, featuring a simple setup without power steering or brakes on base models and offering a five-speed manual as standard, with a four-speed automatic available as an option.
