Description
The Jaguar XJ (XJ40) is a full-size luxury sedan produced by Jaguar Cars from 1986 to 1994. Unveiled on 8 October 1986, as a replacement for the Series III, the XJ40 was an all-new, second-generation model. It introduced several technological advancements, including an electronic instrument cluster and the Jaguar independent rear suspension. Although the Series III continued to be sold alongside the XJ40 until 1992, the XJ40 became known for its innovations and safety features. The 1993 XJ6 was named the "Safest Car in Britain" following a government survey. The XJ40's production run extended to 17 years, making it the second longest-running XJ platform in Jaguar's history.
The XJ40-based XJ12, introduced at the Amsterdam Auto Show in February 1993 under the model code XJ81, was powered by a 6.0-liter Jaguar V12 engine paired with a GM 4L80E 4-speed automatic transmission. It was distinguished by badges on the rear and a V12 emblem on the glovebox. The interior was refined with more standard features, only available as options on the other models. Once the top of the model hierarchy for Jaguar, these beloved sedans have transformed their role from an executive to transportation to well-appointed and useful modern classics.
