Description
Mazda was among the first major manufacturers to bring the Wankel rotary engine to market in the late 1960s and produced the only non-piston engine to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991 with their four-rotor 787B. After decades of tireless development of the rotary engine in their sports car range, Mazda introduced the third generation of the popular rotary-powered RX-7 in 1991, often referred to as the FD. The sleek coupe was one of the most exotic sports cars of the decade both in terms of its styling and technology; it was equal parts muscular and fluid, with a 1.3-liter rotary featuring the industry’s first mass-produced sequential twin turbocharger system from Japan. Dubbed the 13B-REW, the engine’s twin turbocharger system utilized one of the turbos from 1,800 rpm, while the second turbo, pre-spooled, waited to activate until 4,000 rpm to maintain 10 psi of boost until redline. The FD arrived on North American shores in 1993 and was available in base, Touring, and R1 trim. The RX-7 Touring came fully equipped with a sunroof, fog lights, leather upholstery, a BOSE Acoustic Wave Music System, and a rear window wiper. Less than 15,000 FDs were sold in the United States, with the mass production of rotary engines ending altogether with the discontinuation of the RX-8 in 2012, making these unique sports cars highly collectible today.
