Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
When designer Wolfgang Möbius penned the lines for the 1977 launch of the 928, he was leading Porsche into uncharted territory. Designed as a luxury GT, the 928 featured an all-new 316 horsepower, water-cooled 5.0-liter V8 engine placed at the front that was paired with an automatic or manual transaxle for improved weight distribution. Aluminum body panels with a futuristic look and low coefficient of drag allowed created an effortless autobahn stormer. The striking design featured popup headlights behind fully integrated bumpers.
This futuristic theme continued on the interior with a driver-centric center console with an adjustable dashboard instrumentation. Generous 2+2 seating offered rear seats that could be folded flat, increasing storage capacity for a weekly grocery run or additional luggage on an extended continental excursion.
Starting in 1980, Porsche offered a refreshed 928 S with front and rear spoilers — something the original lacked — and it featured a sharper, more angular front end. The 928 S, which debuted in the U.S. in 1983, also sported wider wheels and tires than the previous 928s. The main change, however, could be found under the hood in a revised 4.7-liter engine.
The 928 S4 variant arrived in the second half of 1986 as an '87 model. It offered an updated 316-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 for all markets, and it sported a new single-disc clutch in manual transmission cars and larger torque converter in automatic transmission cars. Notable styling updates included a rounded front end with air intakes, and the rear had a slope between the wide, flush-fitting rear lights and a rear spoiler standing up from the body.
