Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Introduced in 1982, the genesis of the Porsche 944 can be traced back to the mid-1970s when Porsche introduced the 924 model. Engineers chose a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a 2+2 seating configuration, creating a practical sports car for everyday use and the first of the so-called “transaxle” cars. The front engine, V8-powered 928 was the next to follow and based on these sales successes and a little styling help from the 924 GTP racecar from 1980, the 944 was born. The 944 also featured a sleek, aerodynamic design that incorporated box fender flares and pop-up headlights, both distinctive features of the era.
In 1986 Porsche introduced a turbocharged 944 variant, naturally called the 944 Turbo. Of course, Porsche being Porsche, at the same time they introduced a one-make “Turbo Cup” racing series to further tie the street car to its racing stablemates. The street version featured a potent 2.5-liter inline-four engine with a turbocharger and intercooler, generating 220 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. It featured a new exhaust system, revised bodywork, Brembo four-piston brakes, and a stiffer suspension. Renowned for its balanced handling and performance, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 162 mph. This model garnered acclaim for its exceptional agility and precise steering. Competing against the likes of the Nissan 300ZX Turbo, Mazda RX7, and the Chevrolet Corvette, the 944 Turbo stood out due to its distinctive styling, engineering prowess, and track-worthy performance, securing a loyal following among driving enthusiasts globally.
