Description
A 1980s American muscle car that also powered an Indianapolis 500 pole sitter? That could only be the Buick Grand National.
With the skyrocketing fuel and insurance costs and burdensome government regulations in the 1970s, the old ways of producing horsepower were out. That was when Bill Owen and his Buick engineers began working on a turbocharged 231 cu-in V6. Buick first began offering the Turbo V6 option on the 1976 Buick Regal, then introduced the Regal-based Grand National in 1982. Three years later, a modified version of the Turbo V6 powered Pancho Carter to the 1985 Indy 500 pole. With the 1986 GN, Buick added an intercooler, upping the ante to 245 hp, making it faster than the Corvette that year.
This 1986 Buick Grand National was one of 468 exported to Canada that year. A complete rotisserie restoration took place there over the course of 20 years. What was the best of the 1980s is lacking in many ways today, so this GN received a total Pro Touring transformation during that time. The original 1986 Buick Grand National was the class of that era, but wouldn’t you really rather have this Buick?
