Description
In 1971, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the R107, marking the third evolution of their esteemed SL series. Over its impressive 18-year run, the SL underwent a process of refinement and enhancement, which was not only a reflection of Mercedes-Benz's manufacturing ethos at the time, but also a strategic move, considering the R107 had the task of succeeding the revered W113 “Pagoda.” Crafted as a luxurious long-distance cruiser from its inception, the SL embodied the essence of a quiet grand touring car with the top up, or an exhilarating roadster with the top down. By 1981, the oil crisis had prompted Mercedes to replace the 450 SL with the 380 SL in the United States, equipped with a formidable 3.8-liter version of the renowned Mercedes "M116" V8 engine. This engine, celebrated for its reliability, played a crucial role in securing victories for rallying versions in grueling endurance races across the globe.
