1975 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL Cold Start
Description
Introduced in 1971, the Mercedes-Benz SL's third generation, the R107, marked a pivotal shift in the SL range, transforming it into a high-performance luxury roadster and making the leap to V8 engines. Initially offered with a 3.5-liter engine and later expanding to a 4.5-liter option in 1973, the R107 combined the open-air freedom of a roadster with the year-round practicality of a removable steel hardtop and folding soft top.
The 450 SL’s classic Teutonic styling has allowed it to age gracefully. The design included a front spoiler for improved aerodynamics and cooling. Safety advancements included a well-positioned fuel tank and an interior with padded surfaces and flexible controls to enhance passenger protection. At the same time, visibility was improved with strategically placed indicators and large, dirt-resistant taillights. Over the years, the 450 SL adapted to changing regulations, including updates to its fuel injection system that maintained reliability and luxury despite minor power reductions. The R107 range represented a significant step forward for Mercedes-Benz, one that blended performance, comfort, and innovative safety features so that Car and Driver magazine could exclaim, “The 450SL has significance beyond its appeal as a desirable or prestigious two-seater touring car”.
