Description
Cadillac redesigned its entire line in 1971, softening the outline and lowering and lengthening the remaining nine models in the lineup, including the fourth-generation de Ville. Originally used to designate a trim level on the 1949 Cadillac Series 62, the de Ville later became a standalone model, and starting in 1959, it was available both as two-door Coupe de Ville and four-door Sedan de Ville.
Evolving over time while maintaining its standing in the automotive luxury market, the hallmark car balanced style and performance with increased U.S. safety and emissions regulations when it rolled out its fourth generation. By 1975, the Coupe de Ville two-door hardtop featured all of Cadillac's signature styling cues, including a bold grille, prominent chrome accents, and a long, sleek body.
Under the hood was a robust 500 cubic-inch V8 engine, which produced 210 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, paired with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission. The interior was spacious, with plush seating and high-quality materials, and standard amenities included power windows, power seats, and automatic climate control.
GM marketers reflected the era by emphasizing Cadillac’s improved gas mileage while reminding buyers of the brand’s reliability and driving pleasure. “Efficient as it is elegant ... rugged as it is rewarding,” the 1975 Cadillac brochure said. “... [And] the most rewarding experience occurs in the driver’s seat.”
