1971 Land Rover Series II Santana Driving
Description
First things first: Santana is an automaker, not a Land Rover model. Land Rover and the Metalurgica de Santa Ana company of Linares, Spain, entered into a licensing agreement in 1958 to build co-badged, off-road Land Rovers, which were very popular with Spanish farmers and ranchers. The company also exported many Santanas to South America, North Africa, and the Middle East.
For the first 10+ years of the agreement (which was dissolved in 1989), Land Rovers and Santanas were virtually identical — assembled from parts manufactured and crated up in Solihull, UK, and shipped to Spain as CKDs, or Complete Knockdown Kits. However, when British Leyland Corporation acquired Land Rover and Triumph in 1967, Metalurgica de Santa Ana began making minor changes, like using more locally sourced parts while adding comfort and convenience.
Among the Santana upgrades were contoured seats and additional interior trim, as featured on this 1971 Land Rover 88 Series IIA Santana. Overall, these early Santanas are functionally interchangeable with their Solihull counterparts.
