1971 BMW 2002 Startup Video
Description
In the mid-1960s, BMW recognized an opportunity to introduce a smaller, more accessible counterpart to its larger four-door executive sedan, the "Neue Klasse." Led by corporate design director Wilhelm Hofmeister, designers Georg Bertram and Manfred Rennen embarked on the task of bringing this vision to fruition. Their collaboration resulted in the creation of the 1966 production 1600-2, a two-door marvel crafted to be more compact than its predecessor. Despite being smaller and less lavishly appointed, the 1600-2 excelled in performance, boasting a lighter build, enhanced speed, and superior handling. Building on this success, BMW introduced the larger displacement 2002 in 1968, inheriting the performance prowess of the 1600-2 while marking a new era for the brand. The 2002 solidified BMW's reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality, affordable performance vehicles, cementing its place in automotive history.
