Description
Following up on somewhat quirky 1968 styling, Oldsmobile Cutlass designers developed a frontal appearance for 1969 that would, with annual variation, mark the popular Cutlass through 1972. Revamped body panels and new rooflines followed in 1970.
The 1970 model’s front-end styling included a split grille with vertical bars and quad headlights. Lower body trim started at the front side markers, ran over the wheel wells, and flowed to the rear side markers just in front of the rear bumper.
Oldsmobile advertising referred to the ’70 Cutlass Supreme as "an Escape Machine” and waxed eloquently about the economical luxury that it provided its buyers. “Imagine you cruising around town in this sleek beauty. Proud? You'd better believe it. This trim, new personal-size Supreme lets you move up to Olds elegance without leaving the low-price field ... Oldsmobile: Escape from the ordinary."
Most 1968-72 Cutlass buyers chose the standard 350 cubic-inch V8 engine, and these cars are typically excellent performers that demonstrate the qualities and engineering that would drive Oldsmobile to third place in the industry by 1972. Sharing many parts with highly collectible 4-4-2 models, second-generation Cutlasses are well served by reproduction parts vendors and an exceptional enthusiast community.
