1970 American Motors AMC Go Package Driving POV Part 2
Description
American Motors was by far Detroit’s smallest manufacturer, yet they constantly surprised the industry with its fine products. The automotive media was highly impressed with AMC’s 1968 Javelin, their Mustang-fighting Pony Car. Six months later they launched their striking two-seat AMX, which had already set 106 land speed records at the hands of the fastest couple on wheels, Craig and Lee Breedlove, just weeks before. The AMX shared most components with the Javelin, but with 12 inches sectioned out of the rear floorpan, and featured a unique grille, roof, and rear treatment.
For 1970 the AMX received a bold new grille and Ram-Air hood. The Go Package introduced in 1969 continued this year, with 390 cu-in V8, handling suspension, E70-14 redline Polyglas tires, 14 x 6 inch Magnum 500 wheels, plus 11-inch front disc brakes, and a side C-stripe.
This 1970 AMX with Go Package was found disassembled by the consignor, who returned it to its original beauty. A correct, difficult to source 390 engine could not be found, so an AMC 360 V8 was substituted. 1970 would be the last year for the two-seat AMX, and this well restored example celebrates America’s other sports car.
