Description
“The Automobile is the Art.” For William “Red” Lewis, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, generosity with his hometown was natural. A successful and innovative entrepreneur who took the concept of the touch-free car wash and turned it into a worldwide success story, Lewis purchased a cavernous empty downtown building, reviving it as The Automobile Gallery & Event Center, which opened on 1 January 2016. That building was originally home to Denil Cadillac, a mid-century architectural gem that when it opened in 1959; so advanced General Motors used it as the model for Cadillac dealerships throughout the United States. Now to make room for its expanding and constantly evolving exhibits, Hagerty Marketplace is honored to offer these museum-quality vehicles from The Automobile Gallery & Event Center.
It’s one of those images you won’t forget. A 60-second TV commercial showing an adult male dressed in a white dinner jacket wearing white gloves. As he walks in front of a green car he announces: “This is the brand-new 1968 Pontiac GTO. It’s been beautifully restyled from bumper to bumper.” He then proceeds to take a large crowbar and smash the front bumper seven times without damage. The 1968 Pontiac GTO was truly new, from its Endura rubber front bumper to a roof that blended seamlessly into the rear quarter panel. Shorter than the previous GTOs, the new car moved the needle on design. It was again the most popular muscle car in America, and Motor Trend Car of the Year in ’68, so for 1969 why mess with success?
This 1969 Pontiac GTO Hardtop offered from The Automobile Gallery & Event Center is one of those shapes that grabs your attention. And when it’s painted Matador Red as from the factory, the result is positively arresting. Power is by the standard 400 cu-in V8 generating 350 horsepower through a four-speed manual with Hurst shifter. Any wonder why Pontiac called the GTO “The Great One?”
