Description
The Sports Car Club of America’s Trans American Sedan Championship debuted in 1966, and it quickly evolved into a battle of all four American automakers. The great racer and 1970 series champion, Parnelli Jones, said simply, “The Trans Am was the greatest road racing series that has ever been run over here.” Ford, GM, Chrysler, and AMC all produced models created to challenge the championship, including the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
On March 4, 1969, the Pontiac Trans Am made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show. Along with race-bred suspension and brakes, the Trans Am was powered by Pontiac’s famous 400-cubic-inch Ram Air III or optional Ram Air IV powerplants. Three-time World Driving Champion, Jack Brabham, helped develop the machine, and the front air dam, front fender air extractors, and rear spoiler were completely functional and unique to the ’69 Trans Am. All were dressed in Cameo White with twin Tyrol Blue stripes.
Production delays for the new performance car meant just a total of 697 Trans Ams were built in 1969. Both rare and powerful, the 1969 Pontiac Trans Am laid the foundation for the next three generations of Trans Am excitement to come.
