1969 Pontiac Firebird 350 Convertible Walk-Around, Start-Up, Top Operation, and Driving
Description
Brought to market under John Z. DeLorean’s watch at Pontiac, the 1967 Firebird was his attempt to attack the emerging pony car market started by the Ford Mustang. Launched alongside the Chevrolet Camaro with which it shared its F-body platform and “Coke bottle” curves, the first-generation Firebird was originally equipped with a standard 165 horsepower 230 cu-in inline six, while Pontiac’s 326 and 400 cu-in engines comprised the V8 offerings. Like most muscle cars of the era, the Firebird’s options list was lengthy, including extras like a tilt steering column, Rally II wheels, a center console, a remote mirror, power windows, and a rally gauge cluster. Despite an entirely new generation set to debut in 1970, Pontiac restyled the Firebird in 1969, featuring a new front-end design as well as a redesigned instrument panel and steering wheel. Today these early Firebirds are sought after for their artful styling, exciting color schemes, and impressive performance figures.
