Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Introduced in 1968, the Plymouth Road Runner was designed to provide maximum power and performance at a budget-friendly price. The 1969 Road Runner, built on the Belvedere/Satellite platform, scored Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award, as the range was expanded to three models with the addition of a Convertible to the Coupe and Hardtop. Styling changes were minor, as only the grille and tail were altered from ’68. Regardless, sales doubled.
While all three Road Runner models could be had for $3,300 or less — with the standard 335 horsepower, 383 cubic-inch V8 engine and four-speed transmission — there were plenty of performance upgrades available.
One of the most distinctive features of the ’69 Road Runner was its “beep-beep” horn, inspired by the Warner Brothers' cartoon character, along with its “Coyote Duster” air cleaner cover and cartoon graphics. These playful touches, along with the car's aggressive styling, helped it stand out in a crowded muscle car market. The Road Runner's no-frills approach meant it lacked some of the luxury features found in other cars, but this only added to its appeal among performance purists.
