1969 Plymouth Road Runner 440 Six-Pack Recreation Cold Start
Description
The 1969 Plymouth Road Runner scored Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award, as the range was expanded to three models with the addition of a Convertible to a lineup that already included a Coupe and Hardtop. Styling changes were minor, as only the grille and tail were altered from ’68. Regardless, sales doubled.
While all three Road Runner models could be had for $3,300 or less — with the standard 335 horsepower 383 cubic-inch V8 engine and four-speed transmission — there were plenty of performance upgrades available. The 375 horsepower “Super Commando” 440 V8 could be had for an additional $164, the 390 horsepower triple-carburetor “Six-Barrel” 440 V8 for an extra $250, and the 425 horse, 426 Hemi V8 with dual four-barrel carburetors for a hefty $813.45 — nearly $7,000 in today’s money.
In hindsight, there have likely been more than a few buyers who kicked themselves for not coughing up the extra dough. It’s no wonder then that today there’s an interest in recreating/cloning these popular Road Runners. This one began its life as a 1969 Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite, but it was transformed into a “Road Runner” with a series of expensive upgrades. Notably, its original 318 cubic-inch V8 engine was swapped out for a 440 V8 with an EFI Tri-Power system and TTI headers.
