Engine No. 3281571
Porsche's air-cooled flat-six is an iconic engine known for its distinctive sound and performance. Introduced in the mid-1960s in the Porsche 901 (later 911), Porsche's nearly timeless flat-six also found a home in the 904 Carrera GTS and later, the 914/6. This engine layout features horizontally opposed cylinders, providing a low center of gravity and excellent balance. Its air-cooled design eliminated the need for a traditional water-cooling system, reducing weight and complexity. A favorite among enthusiasts and racers, its reliability and performance, its place in automotive history is secure as one of the most iconic powerplants ever produced.
This 2.0-liter flat-six engine was rescued from a stalled restoration project started by two Rutgers University students. The consignor, and a Professor at the University, began to restore it, yet his efforts were also stalled leading to the engine entering storage approximately 20 years ago.
