1968 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback Walk Around and Ride Along
Description
The second-generation Plymouth Barracuda underwent a significant redesign, featuring model-specific sheet metal while continuing to share components with the compact Valiant. Riding on a 108-inch wheelbase A-body, it was offered in convertible, notchback coupe, and fastback designs. Spearheaded by designers John E. Herlitz and John Samsen, the new Barracuda boasted Coke-bottle side contours and extensively revamped front and rear ends. Notable design revisions included wider wheel openings, curved side glass, and S-curved roof pillars on the hardtop variant. The fastback coupe showcased a more streamlined roofline with a steeper rake, accompanied by a smaller flush rear window, departing from the original model's distinctive wraparound design.
With new styling, paired with a range of sporting engines including Chrysler’s new 340 small block. Chrysler development engineer Charles “Pete” Hagenbuch said of the 340, “As for design, all I can tell you is big valves, a big cam, and a high compression ratio.... But it was still a wedge head, and it wasn’t magical. But it sure did feel good.” Originally powered by the 318 V8 engine, this ’68 Barracuda Fastback has been thoroughly restored, updated with that performance 340 cu-in V8.
