1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS Pro Street Cold Start and Drive
Description
Designed to compete against the Ford Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro put up a good fight and became a muscle car icon. Needing a name starting with “C,” Chevrolet derived “Camaro” from a French word for “friend.” First launched in 1967, the new Camaro was available with a variety of engine opinions, from the entry-level inline-six all the way up to the potent 396 cu-in V8. Not only a straight-line performer, but the new Camaro was also competitive in the SCCA Trans-Am series which spawned distinctive models offering turn-key sports car performance.
Classic design may be timeless, but engineering marches on. This 1968 Camaro SS has been given the Pro Street treatment, starting with a bored Chevy 468 Big Block backed by a Tremec TKO-600 five-speed overdrive manual. A Ram Performance Heavy Duty Clutch and custom driveshaft deliver the power to the DOT radial slicks through a Strange S60 Dana 60 differential with 4.10:1 gears. Applied Racing Technologies rear suspension and oversized 13 inch front disc and rear drum brakes keep it under control. Inside is a six-point roll cage and Pro-Car racing seats with five-point safety harnesses. This ’68 Camaro SS is no longer friendly — at least to local Mustangs.
