1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 Convertible Cold Start
Description
Brought to market under the legendary John Z. DeLorean’s watch at Pontiac, the 1967 Firebird was his attempt to attack the emerging pony car market started first by the Ford Mustang and then Chevrolet’s Camaro. “I pushed long and hard to get a version for Pontiac,” DeLorean wrote. “And I guess because of my persistence, management agreed to let us have a version of the sporty compact car only six months after.”
Launched a half-year behind the Chevrolet Camaro with which it shared its F-body platform and “Coke bottle” curves, the first-generation Firebird was originally equipped with a standard 175 horsepower, 230 cu-in OHC inline six, while Pontiac’s 326 and 400 cu-in engines comprised the V8 offerings. Like most muscle cars of the era, the Firebird’s options list was lengthy, including extras like a tilt steering column, Rally II wheels, center console, remote mirror, power windows, and rally gauge cluster. Available in both coupe and convertible bodies, marketing called the Firebird models “Pontiac’s Magnificent Five.”
Today these early Firebirds represent the purest design with the iconic split front grille and sleekly integrated bumpers. And this fully restored convertible, powered by a stroked Pontiac 462 V8, is quite magnificent.
