Description
The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL, part of the “W113” series, is a two-seat roadster produced from 1963 to 1971. Penned by renowned Mercedes styling department head, Paul Bracq, the “Pagoda” gained its nickname from the unique shape of its removable hardtop, which resembles the shape of a Japanese pagoda. Bracq, along with Friedrich Geiger who designed the famed 300 SL and 540 K, played key roles in shaping the iconic look of the W113 series. Their combined efforts resulted in the distinctive and timeless design of the Pagoda, characterized by its clean lines, elegant curves, and, of course, the unique concave shape of the removable hardtop.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL is equipped with the “M127” 2.3-liter inline-six-cylinder engine featuring Bosch mechanical fuel injection, factory rated at 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The compliant suspension and resulting smooth ride are indicative of the focus on comfort and luxury. While many 230 SL sent to the U.S. were equipped with a four-speed automatic, this 1967 230 SL Pagoda has the uncommon four-speed manual transmission. Not only exuding sophistication but also reflecting the meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship synonymous with the Mercedes-Benz brand, this is a true “special occasion” sports car and one of life’s finest automotive experiences.

Ownership History
The consignor acquired this 230 SL in 2018 and states, “The black soft top is in excellent condition and the plastic rear window is clear and free of cracks or significant scratches. The hardtop seals properly and has no signs of rust or decay. The front fenders display the correct creases on the inner portion, near the headlight bezels, original spot welds are present in the engine compartment, and the correct body stampings are visible on the hood and soft top cover. The car starts up nicely, hot or cold, and runs and drives well. The bright work is all present and in very presentable condition.”
