“Total performance with total popularity! Everybody loves Mustang—everybody wants a Mustang. It’s the most popular new car ever introduced!”
Ford wasn’t bragging; to this day no automobile has approached the viral demand for the Mustang when introduced on 17 April 1964. By the time this Mustang was built in 1965 Ford was adding assembly plants at a furious rate to keep up with the demand. The sporty two-door — which Ford General Manager Lee Iacocca called Mustang because the name “had the excitement of wide-open spaces” — shattered expectations with its blend of performance, style, and affordability, capturing the hearts of a young generation of drivers.
Iacocca’s brainchild was a brilliant combination of humble Ford Falcon underpinnings with a long-hood, short deck body. Its sleek and compact shape, aggressive stance, European-style recessed grille, and signature galloping pony emblem became symbols of freedom and youthful energy. Ford’s innovative “pony car” was highly customizable, available in a variety of colors, options, and interior choices that allowed buyers to personalize their Mustang to their tastes. This Hardtop is powered by an upgraded 289 cu-in V8 mated to a three-speed manual transmission, ready to take on the excitement of wide-open spaces.
