Description

“The Automobile is the Art.” For William “Red” Lewis, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, generosity with his hometown was natural. A successful and innovative entrepreneur who took the concept of the touch-free car wash and turned it into a worldwide success story, Lewis purchased a cavernous empty downtown building, reviving it as The Automobile Gallery & Event Center, which opened on 1 January 2016. That building was originally home to Denil Cadillac, a mid-century architectural gem that when it opened in 1959; so advanced General Motors used it as the model for Cadillac dealerships throughout the United States. Now to make room for its expanding and constantly evolving exhibits, Hagerty Marketplace is honored to offer these museum-quality vehicles from The Automobile Gallery & Event Center.

It was simply the greatest new car launch in history. Ford general manager Lee Iacocca chose “Mustang” over the planned name “Cougar” because “it had the excitement of wide-open spaces.”  And Ford’s small, quick wild pony captured the imagination of the buying public like no automobile in history.

When introduced on April 17, 1964, at the New York World’s Fair the Mustang was available in coupe or convertible versions with either six-cylinder or V8 power. But in August of that year the Fastback 2+2 was added, With the folding rear seat up, the rear passenger area had room for two; flip the seat down and there was a roomy cargo area lined in carpeting with chrome trim. At $2,589, the Fastback 2+2 was priced at $207 more than the base Mustang coupe and soon was more popular than the convertible.

This 1965 Mustang GT Fastback 2+2 has been a standout at The Automobile Gallery & Event Center—literally. It’s painted in rare factory Springtime Yellow, a shade that is missing on some period paint charts. It’s also equipped with the optional 225 horsepower 289 cu-in “Challenger Special” V8 with four-speed manual, and has the Black Crinkle Vinyl bucket seat interior, all matching the Mustang’s original specifications.
