1965 Chevrolet Corvair Sport Coupe
Description
Faced with increased foreign competition through the 1950s, General Motors began its investigations into a car that could compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Beetle. As General Manager of Chevrolet, Ed Cole pushed for an entry into the small compact car genre. Using the proven architecture of the Volkswagen Beetle as a basis, the newly developed Corvair featured a rear-mounted air-cooled engine, but unlike the Volkswagen, it featured a larger, more powerful six-cylinder. Modern styling offered in various body styles from coupes, convertibles, sedans, station wagons, and even vans and trucks made the Corvair an extremely versatile offering. The Corvair was also a pioneer in American turbocharged production cars. Today, these cars benefit from a devoted following owing to the continued availability of parts and as a wonderful option for a whole family to enjoy.
