1964 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Convertible Engine Running
Description
Tales of the creation of the second generation (C2) Corvette Sting Ray are both legion and legend. A seductive aerodynamic body with stying by Larry Shinoda and future Porsche design chief Tony Lapine, incorporating innovative rotating headlights, was mounted upon a thoroughly redesigned chassis featuring Corvette’s inaugural four-wheel independent suspension. Powerful 327 cu-in V8 engines in multiple states of performance provided motivation. The result was a Corvette that really was truly new, engineered from top to bottom to become a world-beating sports car.
This 1964 Sting Ray Convertible captures the spirit of the 1960s with modern touches to enhance the experience. The consignor acquired this Arizona convertible in 1977, which was previously stolen and recovered, so originality was never a concern, and upgrades have been ongoing. Al Sowash of Eckler’s sprayed the Torch Red paint with full length body stripe in Pearl White in 1993. Power is from a 350 cu-in Chevrolet engine through a Tremec five-speed manual transmission. The 17 inch Vintage Wheel Works aluminum wheels look like the popular Minilite wheels of the era, but with today’s Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber. Add Steeroids rack-and-pinion steering, front disc brakes, and leather seating, and it’s easy to appreciate the 47 years of enjoyment this Sting Ray convertible provided.
