1964 Chevrolet C10 Custom Stepside Pickup
Description
Launched in the fall of 1959 as a 1960 model, the first-generation C/K debuted with multiple changes for General Motors light-truck design. One notable change was independent front suspension — the pickup market's first — sprung by torsion bars instead of coils. Replacing the Task Force range, the C/K (letter designations replaced previously used numbers) was developed from the start as a truck chassis, no longer sharing commonality with the GM A-body platform.
The C/K adopted several features from cars into its design to increase its functionality; for instance, the C/K pickups used a drop-center frame which allowed for a lower cab and lower center of gravity. While the first generation would not undergo a comprehensive facelift or update, GM would make a series of gradual changes to the model line throughout its production. The hood was redesigned for 1962, the front torsion bars up front were replaced by front coil springs on two-wheel-drive vehicles, and a new windshield design and A-pillar were added to the cab for 1964.
Power trains are similar to the previous “Task Force” era trucks, with choices of thrifty-yet-durable inline sixes or small-block V-8s. This two-owner '64 Custom Stepside — powered by a ’67 Chevy 327 cubic-inch V8 engine that replaced its original six — shows 17,211 miles, which the consignor says is actually 217,211.
