Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
“The Bonnevilles ... for those who want the finest we build,” said Pontiac’s brochure in 1963. The Bonneville line was the flagship of General Motors’ Pontiac division going back to 1958. By 1963, nothing had changed, except Pontiac had earned the reputation as GM’s performance division, with championships in NASCAR and drag racing, and on its namesake, land speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Power was provided with Pontiac’s 389 cu-in V-8 and a 4-barrel carburetor that boosted horsepower to 303 — 20 more than other Pontiacs. Various other 389 options yielded up to 370 horsepower, and there was a 421 cu-in option, too.
This California-built 1963 Bonneville convertible shows why Pontiac had fought its way to third in the overall annual sales race behind constant leaders Chevrolet and Ford. Bonneville cut a striking figure on the street with its new stacked headlights, chiseled metal, and elegant interior. It was powered by the 389 cu-in V8 with a four-barrel carburetor that would soon be found under the hood of the 1964–67 GTO. Pontiac’s famous eight-lug wheels and an upgrade to Wilwood disc brakes on this Bonneville convertible just added to one of Detroit’s finest for 1963.
