Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
This very special collection is offered from Dr. Karl Peace, an esteemed collector dedicated to the Studebaker marque. Following his donation, in its entirety, of his car collection to the Georgia Southern University Foundation, the collection is offered, entirely without reserve, via Hagerty Marketplace.
NBC TV reporter Chet Huntley hosted a television program called “Studebaker – Fight for Survival” which aired on 18 May 1962. Sales were falling and with it Studebaker’s finances. The company called on famed designer Brooks Stevens to update the Hawk and Lark models. “We had $7 million for tooling both cars — normally about enough to tool a Plymouth door handle! We also had only six months before 1962 introduction time,” said Stevens. Though the previous Hawk was a poor restyle of Raymond Lowey’s lauded 1953 Starliner Coupe, under Steven it emerged with a new personality as the Gran Turismo Hawk. Studebaker was the US distributor for Mercedes-Benz, and that relationship is seen in the prominent grille. The interior was redesigned with an aircraft cockpit theme. The Gran Turismo Hawk’s “Thunderbolt” engine was a stroked version of Studebaker’s 259 cubic-inch V-8. Now displacing 289 cu-in it produced 225 horsepower with the $22 four-barrel carb option. Even the “Gran Turismo Hawk” name Stevens chose alluded to the blend of European style and American comfort in his design.
Finished in Avanti Gold paint, this 1962 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk has the grand touring style and comfort befitting its name.
