Description
The 190 SL, developed from the 180 model and inspired by the 300 SL's design, was crafted as an elegant two-seated GT rather than a true sports car. Designed by Karl Wilfert and Walter Häcker, its body echoed that of its predecessor, utilizing a shortened framework from the 180 model instead of the sophisticated space frame of the 300 SL due to its more moderate performance. It featured a single joint cross shaft axle from the 220 a model, ensuring high driving safety, while the front axle suspension was adapted from the 180 sedan. Powered by a new 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft, the 190 SL was publicly unveiled alongside the 300 SL at the 1954 International Motor Sports Show in New York, although it remained a prototype until technical and stylistic refinements delayed serial production to January and May 1955. The final version, showcased at the Geneva Motor Show, introduced several design modifications, including the removal of the stylized air inlet on the bonnet and changes to the bumpers and lights. Available as a roadster or coupe with a removable hardtop, the 190 SL offered a wonderful alternative to the sports car enthusiast wanting a Mercedes-Benz without the lavish price of a 300 SL.
Chassis # 016529 is now coming out of long-term storage and is being offered for sale after mechanical refurbishment to get it running and driving. The consigning specialist has commented that the car starts with ease, warms up, holds appropriate engine temperature, and revs freely. The car shifts through all four gears and clutch holds appropriately. Upon test drive the brakes were functional and it ran without issue for several miles. It should be noted that the steering felt loose and upon inspection on a lift the tie rod bushings are worn with play. It is recommended that the car receive a full safety inspection due to length of storage and age of vehicle.
