Description

As traditionally British as tea and biscuits, and as tough and distinctive as a bulldog, the Land Rover is one of the most legendary utility vehicles ever. The success of the World War II Jeep inspired Rover’s chief designer, Maurice Wilks, to create the Land Rover light agricultural and utility vehicle. One major difference between the Jeep and Land Rover is the British 4x4’s use of an aluminum body, thanks to a post-war surplus of aluminum. The Land Rover’s popularity grew when a longer wheelbase version and station wagon bodies were introduced in the mid-1950s, along with images of these 4x4s on African safaris and other remote locations.

This 1959 Land Rover 109 two-door pickup is an early Series II model, the first major update to the line, which included curved side windows and the rounded roof still used on current trucks. Its pickup truck top is removable, the windscreen folds down, and it has the familiar hood-mounted spare tire. It also features the larger 2250cc gasoline engine introduced on the Series II. Consigned by a Land Rover enthusiast, this Series II carries the patina only a rust-free aluminum body can provide and is ready to take on any safari.
