Description

Pontiac was rapidly becoming General Motors’ performance division by 1958, and Bonneville was Pontiac’s limited-production image-changer in hardtop coupe and convertible versions. Standard power was a new 370 cu-in V8, and “Tri-Power” with three two-barrel Rochester carburetors a popular option. Rochester mechanical fuel injection like the Corvette’s was an extravagant $580 option with 10 more horsepower, as was “Ever Level” air spring suspension, supposedly Detroit’s next big thing. Most buyers — and Hot Rod magazine — preferred the Tri-Power and coil spring versions, with the publication exclaiming, “Our test Bonneville ran the speedometer needle right out of sight and kept accelerating the one time we tried it for a short stretch out on the Nevada desert.”

This 1958 Pontiac Bonneville Sport Coupe, finished in very mid-century “Calypso Green” with “Patina Ivory” inset, is powered by the Tri-Power 370, and was also equipped with “Ever Level” Air Ride suspension, all as from the factory. Most air spring cars from 1958 have the troublesome systems replaced with coil springs, but this Bonneville has been upgraded with a reliable Air Ride Technologies air spring package with a modern control system and twin redundant electric compressors (the rare complete OEM “Ever Level” components are included). With a thorough and meticulous restoration using many original and OEM components, and an air spring suspension functioning as GM intended, this California-built Bonneville Sport Coupe represents the absolute pinnacle of Pontiac panache and performance in 1958.
