Description
The prevailing design aesthetics of the late 1950s— namely the near limitless use of chrome trim—saw the Corvette receive its first major styling update in 1958. The single headlight design was ditched in favor of exposed dual headlights on both corners, positioned above more prominent chrome-lined grilles. New chrome strips ran the length of the trunk, while a distinctive louvered “washboard hood” and rear bumperettes were unique to the 1958 model year. Engine options remained the same, from the base 230 hp 283 cu-in V8 to the range-topping version producing an impressive 290-horsepower, thanks to the expensive optional Rochester Ramjet fuel injection. Inside, a completely redesigned interior featured factory-installed seatbelts and a dramatic dashboard housing the tachometer in a more visible location.
Most buyers in 1958 chose the base 230 hp model over the higher performance variants, like this Silver Blue Corvette with Inca Silver two-tone “coves” (a $16.15 option). It has the optional fiberglass hardtop but no convertible top (a factory option) and is believed to have most original major components including the engine and transmission.

Ownership History
The consignor has owned this 1958 Corvette since 1982. He relates: “My brother always said, ‘The 1958 Corvette was so cool that all you have to do is put a set of tires and wheels on it and instant hot rod.’ From the louvered hood and dual headlights to the chrome enhanced spaceship design, the 1958 Corvette was unique and set apart from later years. Unfortunately, in September of 1981 at the age of only twenty-eight my brother lost his life in a fluke motorcycle accident. This was a dark time for my family and friends. Months passed and one day I was surprised to find a check in the mail, it was a part of my brother’s life insurance payout of which I was not aware. Not a small amount of money and not entirely welcome, I put the check in the drawer and tried to put it out of my head. The very next week a good friend came into the shop and told me that a local car broker had a 1958 Corvette for sale and wanted to know if I wanted to have a look. You always hear people say things like, ‘When one door closes another one opens,’ and I am not always sure I know what that really means. What I am sure of is my gratitude for all the years I have loved and taken care of this car; my brother has always been there helping me turn every wrench and enjoy every ride.”
He also states, “This car is very close to its original condition, including the original factory engine, transmission, etc. Although not a frame-off restoration and with the one exception being the rear axle, all components on this car have been painstakingly restored to their original condition and functionality. Minor modifications made for a safer, more reliable driving experience include an alternator, engine gauges, steering wheel, carburetor, air cleaner, electric engine fan and transmission cooler. All non-stock modifications were made with extreme care so any or all can be easily returned to their original configuration. No holes drilled, no panels cut, or original wiring harness modifications made.”
