Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The Mercedes-Benz SL line of cars was first introduced to the world at the International Motor Sports Show in New York in February 1954. The 300 SL and 190 SL were both unveiled at the event. While the 300 SL was designed for motorsports, the 190 was positioned as a touring car with excellent sporting characteristics and similar styling. The car boasted a 1.9-liter inline-four-cylinder engine paired with dual carburetors, putting it in competition with the Porsche 356 and other sports cars of the time. The 190-class sedans used unibody construction, which was a new and innovative technique that allowed for outstanding handling while keeping the build cost to a minimum. Mercedes-Benz's cutting-edge engineering was evident in the cars' independent front suspension, low-pivot swing axle, and power-ventilated drum brakes, all of which were also found in the illustrious 300 SL.
This lot is offered Without Reserve from The Roger Boman Collection, which comprises 27 vehicles ranging from European to American classics. Many examples within the collection feature Mr. Boman’s standard modification “formula,” including but not limited to the addition of disc brakes, air conditioning, modern fuel injection, and many other custom touches seen by countless enthusiasts around the Fresno, California area who shared the late owner’s passion for this unique assortment of automobiles.
