1951 Studebaker 2R5 Pickup Start Up Video
Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
This very special collection is offered from Dr. Karl Peace, an esteemed collector dedicated to the Studebaker marque. Following his donation, in its entirety, of his car collection to the Georgia Southern University Foundation, the collection is offered, entirely without reserve, via Hagerty Marketplace.
“A streamlined Studebaker truck has the right design for gas saving.” Introduced in mid-1948 as 1949 models, Bob Bourke, working for the Raymond Loewy and Associates office in South Bend, designed the 2R series Studebaker trucks with the closest thing yet to fully integrated styling on a pickup. Bourke, who also was on the design team of the famous 1949 Ford automobiles, gave the new trucks a very modern, or as Studebaker termed it, “streamlined” look, including the industry’s first double wall cargo box and no external running boards. To save manufacturing costs, the front and rear fenders are interchangeable, as are the bumpers.
Under the hood was the same 170 cu-in 85 horsepower flathead six that fitted to the current production Champion cars, mated to a three-speed manual transmission. That may have been adequate for 1951, today this 2R pickup is powered by a 1964 Corvette 327 V8 and three-speed automatic transmission. Power brakes and air conditioning have also been added along with wider wheels and Firestone Firehawk tires. This restored 1951 Studebaker 2R not only has Bob Bourke’s modern streamlined look, but modern performance and comfort as well.

Dr. Peace began a career in biostatistics in the pharmaceutical industry in 1978. His early career path saw him rise to vice president of worldwide technical operations at Parke-Davis / Warner Lambert, followed by his founding of Biopharmaceutical Research Consultants Inc. in 1989. Dozens of international biotech and pharmaceutical companies relied on his expertise for development and regulatory approval of dozens of medicines, including drugs used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, arthritis, anxiety, depression and panic attacks, and gastrointestinal ulcers. He returned to the Statesboro, Georgia, campus in the fall of 2000, when Georgia Southern began to offer the Master of Public Health degree in biostatistics. In 2004, his endowment to honor his late wife led to the creation of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. He is author, co-author or editor of 15 books, 22 book chapters, and over 100 articles in the scientific, medical or biostatistical literature; and is the recipient of over 50 prestigious awards.

Additionally, due to the remote location of the collection and limited access to the facility following the close of the auction, all lots must be retrieved while a Hagerty Marketplace representative is onsite beginning Wednesday, June 19 through Thursday, June 27. No cars can be retrieved prior to June 19 and any lots remaining after June 27 will be transported to the Hagerty Garage + Social in Savannah, Georgia (with costs of transport and a $50/day storage fee assessed to the buyer).
