Description
“Better than ever for 1940!” Ford’s commercial division knew they had a good one in their 1940 01C 1/2-ton pickup. Edsel Ford and his designer E.T. “Bob” Gregorie gave the all-new 1940 light-duty trucks the V-shaped “waterfall” grille and teardrop headlamps of the 1939–1940 Standard series passenger cars, the first time since 1932 that Ford’s trucks shared car styling. The cabs were sturdier and wider, and windshields were now fixed with cowl-mounted wipers. Sealed-beam headlamps were legal for the first time in 1940, and mattress-type springs in the bench seat offered extra passenger comfort. The rectangular instrument cluster also resembled that of Ford cars. Underneath, light-duty trucks kept what was a Ford car frame but stamped from heavier 10-gauge steel instead of 11-gauge. Suspension was still by transverse leaf springs front and rear, plus lever shocks. The standard engine for the 1940 pickups was Ford’s famous 221 cu-in flathead V8 with 85 horsepower.
Some enthusiasts contend the ’40 Ford is the finest looking light-duty truck ever. This award-winning 1940 Ford 01C pickup certainly makes that case.
