1931 Model A Deluxe Coupe
Description
Henry Ford may have put the world on wheels, but he lost the number one sales lead to Chevrolet in 1927. It was time for a change, and Ford replaced the ubiquitous Model T with the substantially more modern Model A in 1928. The new model debuted a host of significant improvements, namely its “L-head” inline-four-cylinder engine which boasted increased displacement and an output of 40 horsepower – double that of the Model T. The A also adopted a more conventional layout of driver controls, which included a clutch pedal and gear shift lever controlling the new three-speed manual transmission. The Model A featured beautiful, Lincoln-inspired bodywork that Henry Ford’s son Edsel oversaw during development. By 1929 Ford was back in first place.
Of the various body styles available on the Model A, the five-window Deluxe Coupe remains a popular choice among collectors for its all-weather comfort and sporty “rumble seat,” priced at just $525 when new. This well restored 1931 Deluxe Coupe is believed to be powered by its original engine. Affordable, reliable, with a dash of Lincoln style, it’s easy to see why Ford produced over four million Model A cars by 1931.
