Description
Despite the hardships of the Great Depression, some of America’s greatest accomplishments, like the Empire State Building and Hoover Dam, came out of this era. Likewise, Buick came out swinging in 1931 even though its sales had dropped sharply as the economy worsened.
Two of Buick’s most important innovations were introduced that year. First, all Buicks were now powered by the automaker’s first Straight Eight engine, all with overhead valves. That engine would be the Buick mainstay until 1953. With this smooth, powerful engine came “Silent-Shift,” one of the first manual transmissions with synchromesh. No more grinding gears, no more double clutching, this made Buick’s driving experience superior to most of its contemporaries.
Buicks were offered in four series in 1931, ranging from the smaller, value-priced Series 50 and 60 models to the luxurious series 90. Slotted below the 90 was the Series 80 at a 124-inch wheelbase, available in a four-passenger “Victoria” two-door coupe or Series 87 six-passenger four-door sedan, like this one. Powered by a 344 cu-in version of the Buick eight, the stylish Series 87 Sedan would be the third-most popular Buick model that year, and shows how out of great adversity can come great accomplishments.
