Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Ford replaced the ubiquitous Model T with the substantially more modern Model A in 1928. The new model debuted a host of significant improvements, namely its “L-head” inline-four-cylinder engine which boasted increased displacement and an output of 40 horsepower—double that of the Model T. The A also adopted a more conventional layout of driver controls, which included a clutch pedal and gear shift lever controlling the new three-speed manual transmission and four-wheel mechanical brakes, making the A much easier to drive. It was available in various body styles, including the Coupe, Sport Coupe, and Roadster, catering to different customer preferences, all featuring beautiful, Lincoln-inspired bodywork that Henry Ford’s son Edsel oversaw during development. The interior was also more spacious and comfortable, reflecting the changing expectations of car buyers.
Ford lost the number one sales lead to Chevrolet in 1927, but wrestled it back by 1929, building over 1.5 million Model A automobiles that year. Of the various body styles available on the 1929 Model A, the Sport Coupe was a popular choice—Ford called it “a splendid all-year, all-weather, car”—priced at just $530 when new. And this 1929 Sport Coupe benefits from a recent restoration.
