Description
The Lincoln Model L was the first automobile produced by legendary engineer Henry M. Leland. He had worked for Cadillac, championing precision manufacturing methods and standards, then left in 1919 to establish the Lincoln Motor Company the next year. By 1922, Lincoln was bankrupt and purchased by Henry Ford. The Model L continued its engineering excellence, powered by a unique 358 cu-in 60-degree L-head V8 using “Fork and Blade” connecting rods. Lincoln produced only the chassis, with some of America’s finest coachmakers producing bodies for these luxury vehicles.
Lincoln produced 8,440 Model L automobiles in 1925, including 548 with the airy “Berline” three-window four-door sedan body by the John B. Judkins Company of Merrimac, Massachusetts. Paul Schmidt, a Jefferson City, Missouri, businessman, purchased this Berline model that year. The car was later inherited in 1966 by his business partner Wilfred Kraus, who kept it in storage until it was acquired by George Townsend of Madison, Alabama, in 1988. Townsend turned the Lincoln over to the artisans at Memoryville USA for a complete restoration, and it earned numerous AACA awards over the years, including the prestigious Senior Grand Champion in June 2012.
This 1925 Lincoln Model L Berline by Judkins is a true triumph of artistry and engineering from the Roaring Twenties.
